My Final Post on the Madeleine McCann Case
Dear Blog Readers,
Today I make my final post on the Madeleine McCann case. I feel at this point, I have done what I can and no more effort will make any difference in the outcome of this case. In fact, from what I have seen recently, there is a sad desperation on the part of those who wish to see a positive resolution, turning on anyone who dares to suggest that justice simply will not be forthcoming in this particular case, that sometimes the bad guy wins, and the good guys have to accept that, in this lifetime, the truth may not come out.
I have been recently attacked for suggesting:
1) That the Gaspar statements are not reliable. I cannot get excited about these because we only hear from one woman who wasn't exactly sure what she saw and from her husband who does not agree with her assessment. Sadly, some of those who cry out that we ought to rely on facts in the McCann case are willing to allow one questionable statement about David Payne to become a focal point of what happened to Madeleine, that it is okay to slander David Payne while at the same time standing up for Gonçalo Amaral. I fail to understand this double standard; if there is not proof to denigrate David Payne, then we ought to leave further speculation to the investigation, should one even exist.
2) That Maddie did not meet her demise earlier than May 3rd. I have no problem with theories that suggest Maddie died earlier in the week, but I do not see any evidence to support this. If I can be polite about such speculation, I expect that I should receive the same kindness in return. I, myself as a profiler, find the crime scene to suggest that Maddie died on the night that the McCanns claim she was abducted. This is my professional opinion which I explain in my book and in my blogs.
3) The Scotland Yard review is a sham. Through all my years as a profiler, I have years of experience of how real investigations are handled. Nothing that I have seen from Scotland Yard suggests that they are looking at any possibility but the abduction theory. I do not believe they are going to arrest or try the McCanns. If others would like to believe that Scotland Yard has spent three years and millions of pounds to cover ground that was not necessary to cover in order to take down the McCanns, bully for them, but it is not anything I have seen in twenty years and I am not going to pretend I am seeing some clever ruse being employed when I do not.
Hence, I wish all those hoping for a positive end that their wishes come true, but as a professional I am not going to go along with a program just to make people comfortable. I have always spoken the truth and I am not going to change that now just to make sell people a pipe dream.
I will sit back now and wait for the outcome of the case. I wish Gonçalo the best and I hope that, in time, the truth about this case will come out so that future missing persons' cases will not suffer because the McCanns and the British government have misled the public in the most outrageous manner I have ever come across in my career.

What really happened to Madeleine Beth McCann in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2007? Was she abducted as the Gerry and Kate have claimed or did something happen to Madeleine on May 3 in the vacation apartment and the incident covered up? Criminal Profiler Pat Brown analyzes the evidence and takes the readers through the steps of profiling, developing a theory that is intriguing and controversial.

Pat, I do agree with you on the 3 points. SY was asked to review in order to find an abducted Madeleine, possibly alive, nothing more. Likely Mr Cameron and co didn't even bother to read the AG report that stated the crime hadn't been determined and why the investigation couldn't go further. Those are the real responsible ones. They cautioned the McCanns' grotesque saga and tasked the SY team with an heroic mission, all feeling like brave soldiers fighting for a good cause.
SY can't but have understood that there was no abductor and no child to be found. But they'll have to keep it for themselves because that is not at all politically correct. The truth would prejudice too many important persons. The McCanns shouldn't have been allowed to sing their song for so many years. Nobody will ever blame those who chose to listen to them because that suited their social image, whereas the McCanns will have to face the rest of their children for the rest of their life.
Anne - you say "Those are the real responsible ones." But shouldn't the Portuguese authorities now be included, for agreeing to co-operate with SY without insisting on a reconstruction (the lack of which resulted in the original shelving of the investigation)? However, to their credit, they have so far resisted SY calls for a joint investigation, so perhaps a reconstruction is the sticking point there.
Thank you for your great work in recording, translating and uploading the Lisbon trial proceedings, and I look forward to reading the final sessions (if they ever happen!).
Pat - thank you too. Sadly, I agree.
I agree with all 3 points, in that without further evidence/analysis the Gasper statment could mean anything. The whitewash is obvious IMO as well, and personally I'm utterly confused about the date of death.
It strikes me that everything has been said and done in this case and until new evidence crops up, maybe there's very little to be said and taking a break is good for the soul. I also think that the worst insults that people in this case get, aren't from those who defend the Mccanns; rather the biggest hurt always arises when you get attacked by your own side as it were, so I can understand your feelings Pat.
Anyway, for all the work you've done, from the grass roots, in depth research and case analysis, to your very neat and digestible blog posts and book, I for one would like to thank you for all your brilliant contributions and I'm sure history will one day give you all the credit you deserve.
I agree with the above post and thank you, Pat. Respect.
I will continue to follow your blog on subjects of your choice.
Pat, I agree with you. Respect to you and thank you for your input. I pray that one day, Madeleine will get the chance to tell her side of the story, whether in person or through forensics. Poor little girl x
Pat Thank you so much for all your work to date on this case. For me and I'm sure for a great many people it was your blog that opened my eyes to the truth about this case. I hope that the next post on this is not like your Rubin Carter post where you are commenting on the Film made about the poor unfortunate innocent couple who were subject to abuse from conspiracy nuts like yourself. I don't think I could bear that which is why I hope against hope that you are wrong about the whitewash. I know from what I have read that it certainly looks that way and I know when I say fingers crossed that it isn't that you will be the first to cross your fingers. I am not really in a position to comment on the DP and Gasper issues because I haven't studied the files however the blog you wrote on the issue of the Death on the 3rd was one of the best blogs on the subject I have read on all the sites I have visited and cannot understand how anyone could argue with the points you made. It is with a heavy heart Pat that I read your post today. I hope you will reconsider and I look forward to reading your book on the subject whenever you get it published. The loss of you to the quest for the truth equates to TMC 1 Truth 0

The Portuguese have certainly their part of responsibility. When they said that no reconstruction would take place if only one witness refused to attend, they were obviously seeking an honourable exit.
But you have to take into account that this is a little country facing a dominating one. As you have to consider that there was only intelligence of death and no evidence of murder, the only crime was the concealment of the child's body, an act that is punished with a fine.. as obstruction to an investigation is. As GA observed in his book, the Portuguese have nothing to do with the fraudulent Fund.
When you conceal something that can't be discovered without getting you into trouble, the only safe way is to destroy it completely, have it reduced to its primary elements.
This is basic.
Pat, I have been reading your comments for some time and feel you are 100% correct in your final summation of this case.
All evidence points to Madeleine being dead but those culpable will never be brought to justice unless
a) remains are found
or
b) someone spills the beans.
It is ridiculous that SY is ignoring basic flaws in the various statements but following 'lines of enquiry' that clearly have no basis in fact. The Portuguese shelved the case because of their conclusions.
IMO - the McCanns are not telling the truth. Simple as that.
Dearest Pat
I understand how you feel and your reasons for saying goodbye in this dreadful matter.
Everything you have said makes complete sense and I, along with many others, shall miss you. Some people can't see any further than the end of their nose, foolish people who make silly remarks when they are not professional like you are and have little or no experience in these matters.
I would like to think that you may reconsider at some point, your vast experience and expertise is so needed. We all love the way you write, so easy to follow and understand.
It is with a heavy heart I say THANK YOU Pat, we shall miss you. Good Luck in all your cases.
xx
Pat, don't give up now. We need people like you on side. You're giving victory to injustice. I disagreed with your Gaspar opinion. I thought there was some merit in pursuing the Gaspar statement - at least to rule out any paedophilic involvement. Madeleine, your friend Amaral, those who remain uneducated in the case and justice needs you to continue your highly perceptive comments. I thank you for elucidating and educating me in the case but it would be wrong for you to leave now. The fight goes on.
You can't say that Mr. Rebelo didn't try to get these people to Portugal to do a reconstruction; he did everything he could but to no avail. It was quite clear that they had no intention of attending a reconstruction, because they knew their lies would explode in their faces. In the latest review / investigation I suspect that the Portuguese police were asked to identify a candidate for an abductor in their files and they complied with their oldest ally's demands. When the civil trial was about to start and Scotland Yard wished to be on Portuguese soil and needed the Portuguese police to help them in their endeavours the only way this could legally be accomplished was for Portugal to reopen the case. Therefore much like the Scotland Yard investigation the Portuguese investigation is a sham, there never was any viable evidence that would warrant the case to be reopened.
You've made the right decision Pat. I myself was turned upon a few months ago for stating that it would be naive to think that the Portuguese would now after 7 years charge the McCanns with neglect. Some people's beliefs are so deeply ingrained that they can't bring themselves to believe that Scotland Yard is doing nothing more than an expensive public relations exercise. Not even Mr. Redwood can convince them, when he looks into the camera and says with disdain that anyone who believes the McCanns are suspects are conspiracy theorists. And Mr. Redwood is right because if you do believe the McCanns are suspects and you have followed this case you have to believe that people conspired to keep the couple from being brought to justice. Before this case I trusted what was disseminated in the mainstream media and England to me was this idyllic democracy; of course that has changed. I guess my beliefs weren't so deeply ingrained or perhaps my trust in mathematics convinced me that the probability of so many coincidences is next to nil.
Well I'm going to lie low myself and wait for the train wreck to happen. Have a nice summer everyone.
Pat, as one of the many readers of this excellent blog, I would like to personally thank you for your true commitment, dedication, honesty and intergrity in handling this high profile case. You always were able to clearly see the writing on the wall. You handled yourself with dignity and grace and even with humor when disgusting mud was thrown at you; (which was quite frequently)
So thank you for your countless hours of time to this case. I don't believe that your efforts and hard work will be in vain. The Bullox Media segments were brilliant and your work really opened my eyes about this case as it did for many people! Keep up the fantastic work please!

Pat,
You have always written honestly and have been a huge influence on attempting to achieve the truth for Madeleine.
To have had somebody with your profile and expertise, risk it all to achieve the truth for Madeleine shows what a courageous lady you are, lets be honest - when you speak people listen.
There must be times when you get frustrated with the comments made.....don't ever get disillusioned by such people, most know that what you say is just the cold hard reality of situations.
I think its just hard to stomach reality sometimes - we can all become emotional, irrational when we witness injustices, in fact, one could say its the reason we need Law and order, Truth and Justice.
All I am saying is that people are hitting out at the injustice of the reality - and to be honest that's positive, it shows the spirit for Truth and Justice lives and that imposed false reality will not wash.
Thank you for the massive amount of time, money and work you have put in to establish the truth.
My real hope is that you will only take a break and come back - I realise that without People like you at the forefront ....getting the truth will be nigh on impossible.
Thank you.

@ Thank you pat, for everything, there have been times we have not always agreed, or i have misunderstood, never personal, just emotional at times, i would also like to thank everybody trying to peice this together, your experience pat will have a lasting effect in years to come, between all of us, it will be revealed one day what realy happend to this child named madeleine, god bless you pat for the time and effort you have made to care about this missing child, never give up beleiving what you beleive, time will tell in the end.
Hi Pat
"in time, the truth about this case will come out so that future missing persons' cases will not suffer because the McCanns and the British government have misled the public in the most outrageous manner I have ever come across in my career."
" in time "
Very true. Time has the habit of catching up with us. The media offerings of past misdeeds by The Met and various celebrities which were carried out at the " time " are being unearthed and are better discovered later than never.
This particular incident is no different in terms of time to any other past occurrences.
The truth is that just as the original investigation was heading in the right ( truthful) direction someone or someones intervened to turn the investigative direction from North to South.
In my humble opinion the only someones who can make changes in direction like that can only be Government forces. Even Rupert Murdoch et al can't have that kind of effect on a case. Yes they can influence or report what is happening but this is usually reactive not pro-active.
Someones were being pro-active from the off on May the 3rd.
If in time the reasons why this occurred becomes known then all will fall into place.
Meanwhile as has always been the case we have to wait and see what ' emerges'
Something will- it always does. That is not a pious wish by the way.
The media tales being seen today were written and carried out many years ago.
Perhaps the people involved then didn't think that their story would ' emerge ' at all?
At the time.
Good luck Pat and I'm sure that we will all return to this mystery eventually.
Anne, I think you will post again. How will you resist when new headlines explode over the newspapers? And they surely will! Not least from the McCann's PR team, which has obviously generated many of the stories in the past. We have the resolution of the Gonzales among many others.
Anyway, I don't agree with your SY point(the jury is still out imo), but respect your professional opinion and hope everyone gets the best outcome for this case. That being the truth!
^ I meant to say Pat not Anne... please edit my post if you can as I cannot...
Pat,
I think you are absolutely right; and as so often on these threads I can only echo the sentiments of Guerra ^^^ somewhere above!
Good luck with all your future writing and blogging, which I look forward to reading!
I appreciate your hard work & dedication to the little girl & the truth.

good luck pat
Sad, but Pat of all people knows when it's time to call it a day. Tragic that the forces at work (powerful enough to organise a SY whitewash no less) have probably won the day and even more frustrating to know that the MacScams and the Tapas 7 will never see a day in court. Truly the most unusual and just plain strange case I've ever seen.
What's sadder yet is that even SY has less power than Mccanns
That 2 seemingly ordinary people have been able get an entire police force to do what they want when they want.
Scotland Yard is powerless.
That is when you know you are in trouble.
Pat just because the whole thing is a joke, it doesn't mean people like yourself should quit! Your opinion on the latest development is always most interesting to read, please don't stop! I can understand your frustration but we need people like you being vocal especially when the pro-mccann book will be released. Please reconsider!
Sara
Oh Pat! What a pity! I will still keep an eye on your blog.
You could at least have waited until September to help with the counter-reputation management effort on behalf of Amaral as the McCanns' attempt the symbolic decapitation of their nemesis.
Still...you have said and re-said what you had to say, and in doing so you have spoken in a most lucid and eloquent manner for all of us (millions! Surely!) who do not believe in the McCanns' and their friends "official version" of events.
In the intereim, the McCanns' reputation management team (Clarence Mitchell/Burson-Marsteller who are overseeing Scotland Yard via the Cameron connection) will be very quite - at least until the trial resumes in Portugal next month (assuming it does).
Then the Macs' reputation management team - via Scotland Yard - will again be in full swing, in a desperate attempt to influence the Portuguese judge - who, for all we know, has been hand-picked for the case...
Then, another lull, until the case goes to the Appeals Court...
Then, another lull, until the case goes to the International Court of Human Rights...
Then, another lull, until the definitive book on the case is published by Pat Brown in tandem with Gonçalo Amaral. Fingers crossed!
Oops!
It could happen (as indeed it has happen recently) that another Scotland Yard chief detective is charged with corruption except "Einstein" (Redwood's nick) links to the British PM should keep him in good stead - unless of course Labour wins the next general elections which has present looks unlikely due to a lack of charisma in their leadership (they say) but, one never knows.
Keep up the good work Pat and stay loose! You are an icon of reason.
I hope one day to meet you in person and give you a big hug "a la Portugaise". Be well.
Nostradamus
I thank all of you for your kind words!
My blogs on the case have always had a specific focus; early on, to point out the oddities of this missing person case, then a profile on the case once I had Kate's book to verify the McCann's stance, then my own investigation in PDL to solidify what I believe happened to Maddie and where she was likely buried. Then, I wanted to support Gonçalo and try to get a book out by the two of us to cover all the facets of the case; the detective work, the profile, and the political issues. This book was ignored by the publishers. Finally, when Scotland Yard started ramping up its "investigation" I wanted to show people that this was all a sham and a media manipulation (hence, the "Bollux Media" reports).
But, then, there was the search and Summer's book and this led me to conclude we were going to see a wrap-up sometime this year, a final "closing" of the case in a way that will satisfy the majority of the uneducated public.
My final blogs pointed out my believe that this case was going to be put to bed with the McCanns walking free. Since then what I have seen in blogs is desperate belief that Scotland Yard is planning some big coup and a lot of anger a frustration being meted out to those who see the final nails being pounded into Maddie's coffin. Since there is likely to be no forward movement and the train is just derailing off the tracks, there remains little to comment on except the damage. I have already commented on the damage I believe this case has done to missing person's cases worldwide and especially to missing children's cases (in helping parents get away with crimes against their own), and, so, there is nothing more for me to comment on professionally.
That there are those who wish to keep the story of Madeleine McCann alive on the net for years to come is fine with me, but I feel there is no more I can contribute in the discussion of this case. I will move on to discussing the analysis of police cases in general, although, certainly, the McCann case may be referred to on occasion as it is important for police detectives to understand how things work in the real world, in their own department and in other police departments.
Hugs to all,
Pat
Dear Pat I am very sorry to read that this will be your final post on the McCann case. I have been reading your blog for sometime and have never left a comment however today I would like to thank you. It has been an education for me reading your posts and learning how you disseminate the facts and fiction. Just today I opened Daily Mirror website and the headline involved the McCanns so I read it and then thought let's see what Pat has to say about this. Thank you so much Pat for trying to get to the bottom of this sad, frustrating story. I will continue to read your blog and let's hope one day there may be developments. Best wishes.
Vicki,
If you have read my blogs, you know exactly what I would say! How many times can I say the same thing over and over? Whether this sham goes on for a month longer or a year longer, the outcome will be the same.
Pat,
Please think again,if you give up its as if you are turning your back on that little girl.
You have done so much
I have listened to most of Richard D Hall's observations on the Madeleine McCann case, and feel he has made some very valid points. I tend to agree that Madeleine died prior to 3rd May. Having reported the so-called abduction at 10pm there would not have been sufficient time to hide her body then. And all this talk about planting cadaver smell. I am no expert, but what abductor would even think of doing such a thing? It would surely mean that they would have carried away Madeleine's corpse in that case? I don't think so!!
